Massachusetts Flame Retardant Ban

In Massachusetts, if the concentration of flame retardant used exceeds 1000ppm, it will be prohibited to use.

The scope includes: children's products, upholstered furniture, carpets and bedding manufactured or sold in Massachusetts.

The ban is intended to protect children and families from harmful flame retardants. The state senate unanimously passed the bill. It is now forwarded to the State House Ways and Means Committee.

The flame retardants covered by this regulation include TDCPP, TCEP, HBCD, TBPH, TBB, TCPP, pentaBDE, octaBDE, tetrabromobisphenol A, antimony trioxide and chlorinated paraffin.

If the ban comes into effect, it will only affect products manufactured after January 1, 2019. The list of prohibited substances will have to be reviewed every three years.
